Malaysia perlu lebih ramai pelajar sains?

‘Push for Science and Maths needed’ KUCHING: More efforts are needed to promote science and math among students judging by their lacklustre interest in the subjects. According to Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) Datuk Fadillah Yusof yesterday, the country was still relatively behind as far as students’ interest in the two subjects were concerned. From the latest facts on June 2010, the ratio between students in literature and science based classes is 2:1. In science classes, ratio between male to female students is 1:1.4 which means female students are more interested in science compared to boys,” he said at the launch of ‘Astronomy Day’ at Sultan Iskandar Planetarium Civic Centre. “In universities, the ratio of students in science and literature subjects is 0.8:1. It means that we have 56 per cent students in literature and only 44 per cent students in science,” he added. Fadillah hoped that programmes such as the ‘Astronomy Day’ would be able to spark more interest among the young. “This thing needs effort from everyone including parents, leaders and schools to promote innovation and science. “We need to find ways to encourage creativity and innovation among the people so that they can turn that into innovation, processes and new technology to improve on what we have now,” he stressed. He added that students’ lack of interest might be mainly due to the misconception that Science and Math subjects were difficult. “We still have so much to do in encouraging interest in these subjects in schools. Because that is the most vital stage to set a strong foundation for the love of the subject,” said Fadillah. The Petra Jaya MP also said that Malaysia is now producing only 30 science-based professionals per 10,000 workers instead of 50 which is one of the benchmarks of a fully developed nation. “We need at least 50 scientists, researchers, engineers per 10,000 workers. That is our aim in order to be a developed nation. “But now we only manage to produce only 30. If we want to be known as a developed nation, we need to have 50 people,” he said. Meanwhile, Fadillah also mentioned that he would be requesting for new digital equipment for Sultan Iskandar Planetarium during the mid-term review of the 10th Malaysia Plan. “We hope we will be able to get allocation for the new digital equipment to help relive this planetarium so that children can visit it and be more interested,” he said. Also present was Social Development and Urbanisation Ministry (KPSU) permanent secretary Soedirman Aini and Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) mayor Mohamad Atei Abang Medaan. The programme was organised by KPSU and Mosti.

Terdapat beberapa perkara/fakta penting dikemukakan dalam artikel di atas, iaitu:

  • pelajar aliran sastera lebih ramai berbanding aliran sains (2:1)
  • pelajar perempuan lebih ramai mengambil jurusan sains berbanding lelaki (1.4:1)
  • 56% pelajar jurusan sains di IPT ialah wanita, 44% adalah lelaki
  • Malaysia hanya menghasilkan 30 profesional dgn latar belakang sains, dalam setiap 10,000 pekerja

Hal ini dikatakan berpunca daripada salah faham pelajar yang menganggap subjek sains dan matematik susah. Justeru ‘penyelesaiannya’ ialah dengan memperbanyakkan pelajar yang mahir subjek-subjek matematik dan sains.

Kita boleh mengungkapkan beberapa persoalan:

  • Mengapa ramai pelajar perempuan dalam bidang sains, mengapa lelaki kurang?
  • Benarkah dengan 2:1 menggambarkan pelajar perempuan lebih meminati sains?
  • Adakah benar kekurangan pelajar sains hanya disebabkan tidak meminati sains dan matematik?
  • Adakah 30/10000 profesional itu benar-benar profesional dan layak?
  • Adakah jika bilangan itu melebihi 50 (seperti bilangan piawai) cukup untuk menilai Malaysia sudah setaraf negara maju?

Dan soalan-soalan yang lebih mendasar ialah:

  • Apakah sebenarnya takrifan ‘aliran sastera’ dan ‘aliran sains’?
  • Adakah pembahagiannya tepat dengan maksud ‘sains’ dalam ertikata sebenar yang difahami oleh ilmuan?
  • Bolehkah masalah/isu ‘kekurangan saintis’ diselesaikan dengan hanya menguasai subjek sains dan matematik?

Fikir-fikirkanlah…

Ramai remaja tidak tahu apa yang perlu dikejarkan.. kebanyakan remaja bersekolah untuk mendapatkan gaji yang banyak bila bekerja nanti.. tak salah kalau nak selitkan niat untuk dapatkan duit/rezeki, tapi lebih baik dijadikan sebagai niat ketiga atau keeempat.. bila duit didahulukan, pelajaran entah kemana, sains ke sungai dan matematik ke laut, mana arah tuju pun tak tau, yang remaja tahu, lepas belajar mesti bekerja untuk dapat duit sebanyak mungkin supaya dapat beli kereta besar, rumah besar, baju bertimbun2, koleksi barang kemas, kahwin dengan perempuan sejelita mungkin yang mampu dipikat, etc…diaorang lebih kepada material..

    Alangkah indahnya jika remaja menggunakan sepenuh tenaga mudanya dengan menimba ilmu seterusnya mencipta teknologi canggih yang tidak pernah dicipta lagi, sekaligus menyejukkan perut ibu yg mengandung, memartabatkan agama, bangsa dan negara..tenaga remaja masih muda lg, klu kita dpt brainwash mereka, remaja mampu menyelamatkan agama Islam dan negara kita.. ini tak, guru kaunselor kat sekolah menengah pun tak buat keje, serah pada guru disiplin sahaja.. guru kaunselor sepatutnya basuh remaja yang bermasalah tu..

    Generasi sekarang mencorakkan masa depan negara kita, klu perangai budak2 sekarang mcm ‘offset’ @ short circuit, maka bersepah la kemungkaran dan kerosakan di Malaysia.. uiiiyaai, elakkan ooii.. seram aku pikirkannya..

    Kita perlu sama2 sedarkan remaja “kenapa diaorg perlu belajar”.. dan saya percaya ia mmg sukar dilakukan.. budak2 zaman sekarang bila kita nasihat, dia tengking dan kutuk kita balik.. pening kepala aku la.. budak2 sekarang selalu buat tenaga pengajar demam, tak kisah la, mula dari tadika, rendah, menengah, hingga ke universiti..

    maaf tuan, saya mula melalut tak tentu pasal.. jari saya bergerak secara auto.. maaf zahir batin jika ada yang tersinggung dan tersalah cakap atau tersalah topik atau tersalah comment atau tersalah eja..
    maafkan saya.. sebab perkara ni selalu bermain di fikiran saya, buat saya risau, dan tak tau nk luahkan kat mana.. hhaai, entahla..
